Abstract:
Interprets "The Merchant of Venice" as an anti-racist response to the 1594 hanging of the Converso Roderigo Lopez, in which the homosexual circle of the Earl of Essex was involved. Focuses on the double scapegoating of Jews and homosexuals, who were associated with Italians in Tudor England. Attributes the particular hostility of Antonio toward Shylock to the former's homosexual defensiveness, which is expressed as antisemitism.
