Abstract:
Discusses images of Dachau during the Nazi era and the memorials constructed there since the end of World War II. The early postwar memorials tended to employ terms and styles reminiscent of the Nazi era, as well as Christian themes and symbols, with no reference to Jewish victimization. Observes a pattern of open or concealed contempt for Jewish victims in the memorials. After 1960 the prisoners' barracks were torn down, thereby minimizing the camp's relics, to make way for the conversion of the camp into one large memorial. Pp. 39-41 describe the Jewish monument erected by the Jewish community of Bavaria in 1967, which is reminiscent of the death ramp leading to the gas chamber.
