Abstract:
Examines the historiography of the 1968 student protests in Poland. Notes that although a considerable number of the protesters were of Jewish descent and this fact was exploited by the state's propaganda, it was largely disregarded by research until 1989. This was due to restrictions imposed on research by the communist regime, and to the fact that early historiography of the protests - and the early opposition movement which they were part of - had to rely mostly on oral transmission which was shaped by the narrative of the student protagonists. Since most of them shared a Polish rather than Jewish self-image, they would not emphasize their Jewish background. Only after 1989 did international and Polish research begin to explore the reasons for the large percentage of Jews among the protesters. Discusses various attempts to incorporate the events of 1968 into Polish and Jewish history.
