Abstract:
Argues passionately that during the Holocaust, Jewish songs were a form of spiritual resistance. In ghettos and concentration camps, as well as in hiding, songs helped Jews not only to survive but also to preserve their human dignity. In some cases, music played by Jewish musicians was instrumental in their rescue, as in the cases of Władysław Szpilman, members of the women prisoners' orchestra in Auschwitz, and others.
