Abstract:
The proliferation of the Arab antisemitic discourse since the 1990s has prompted a growing interest in the topic and it has become a more legitimate subject of research. Examines assessments of Arab Islamic antisemitism made by scholars during the last two decades. The disagreement among scholars is striking: while some of them dismiss the very usage of the term "antisemitism" in regard to present Arab discourse, others claim that Arab antisemitism stems from a long religious and cultural tradition and that Arab nationalism and Islamic fundamentalism bear inherent fascist traits. Focuses on the assessment of three aspects of Arab Islamic antisemitism by researchers: the origins of this antisemitism and its relation to the Arab-Israeli conflict, the impact of Nazism on Arab antisemitism, and the place of antisemitism in the ideology of Islamist movements. Draws attention to the Arab critical discourse on Arab Islamic antisemitism. Notes that blaming this phenomenon on either Nazi influence or on Israel's deeds is over-simplistic, since the "Protocols" gained popularity in the Arab world long before 1933. It is no less wrong to project notions of antisemitism or racism onto traditional Islamic culture.
