Abstract:
Contends that German historians have not been able to explain the Holocaust credibly from the aspect of continuity in German history. States that, except for relatively small groups, antisemitism, though widespread, was of minor importance in Wilhelmine and Weimar Germany. The historians' problem is that they have not seen antisemitism as a syndrome of nationalism. It was transmitted as an integral part of nationalism, with some exceptions. While this does not explain the murderous politics of the Nazi leadership, it may help to explain the silent acquiescence or the apathy of a large part of the German population.
