Abstract:
Discusses the account given by Hebrew chroniclers of the Crusaders' attacks on the Jews of Cologne in 1096, and the descriptions of how the Jews reacted. Relates that the Archbishop of Cologne dispersed the Jews in outlying fortified towns, but that this did not save them from being massacred by Crusaders. The Jews also sought places to hide among Christian acquaintances. The most extreme Jewish reaction was to commit suicide for the sake of Kiddush ha-Shem - martyrdom to sanctify God's name - rather than convert to Christianity.
