Abstract:
Relates the experiences of Romanian Jews imprisoned in the Vapnyarka concentration camp in Transnistria, which functioned from September 1942 to October 1943 as a camp for political prisoners and was controlled by the Romanian Interior Ministry and military authorities. They contended that all of the Jews imprisoned in Vapnyarka were convicted for subversive activities on behalf of leftist parties, and especially the communists, but in fact a considerable number of them were falsely accused. Discusses briefly the anti-Jewish legislation and the concentration camps in Romania during World War II. Describes the conduct of the Romanian camp authorities, the self-government of the Jewish prisoners, the harsh living conditions, forced labor, acts of resistance, and attempts of the Jewish communal organizations of Romania to help the prisoners.
