Abstract:
Examines the activities of organized Polish Jewry in its attempt to find a mode of Jewish existence in Poland in 1945-47, as well as the communist leadership's changing attitude toward Jews in 1945-50. Argues that in the immediate postwar period the communist leadership held a relatively favorable stance toward the Jewish minority, which stemmed mainly from pragmatic considerations. This positive view of Jews was greatly exaggerated by the (mostly anti-communist) Polish population and nourished antisemitic sentiments. The restitution of Jewish property, inconsequent as it was, also exacerbated antisemitism. The Jewish political leadership supported the idea of partnership with the government, hoping that it would help to restore Jewish life in Poland and secure the Jewish community's physical safety. The short postwar period of Jewish-communist rapprochement in Poland ended with the almost complete dissolution of Jewish autonomy and the emigration of all but 25-30,000 Jews.
