Abstract:
Discusses the policies of Portugal, and of its president Salazar, toward the Jews during the years 1942-45. In France there were ca. 250-300 Greek and Turkish Jews of Portuguese origin who had been granted Portuguese citizenship in 1910-26. Although Salazar was not inclined to help these Jews, some local consuls (e.g. António Alves in Paris) chose to do so. Jewish refugees were only allowed to enter Portugal en route to other destinations; however, in 1943 Salazar (in anticipation of an Allied victory) accepted 184 of the Jews from France who were in danger of deportation. But he refused to help ca. 500 Jews of Portuguese origin in Greece, and made little effort to help ca. 4,000 Jews of Portuguese origin in the Netherlands.
