Most of the Palestinian volunteers were Jewishand Communist, although a few were Zionist, andseveral were Arabs. Notwithstanding their politicaland ideological convictions, the decision to goto Spain was a personal one and not necessarilydictated by their political parties. They all paid adear price for this decision. Pinchas Chefetz wasinjured on the Iberian front, and was evacuated formedical treatment first in Paris and then in the SovietUnion. His efforts to return to Jerusalem followingthe end of World War II and the establishment of thestate of Israel met with Soviet refusal, and Chefetzcommitted suicide.
