Abstract:
Argues that the striking rise in antisemitism in France in the 1930s, which others have attributed to xenophobia, anti-communism, and scapegoating, was in fact motivated largely by competition with French citizens of the middle class, including merchants, artisans, and members of the liberal professions, especially lawyers and physicians. In their campaigns against Jews, these groups employed themes of anti-capitalism characteristic of late 19th-century French antisemitism. Attributes French antisemitism of the 1930s to the fact that Jews were heavily concentrated in middle-class professions and businesses, unlike most foreign workers who worked at menial, physical labor. The antisemitism of the 1930s helped pave the way for Vichy and its anti-Jewish legislation.
