Abstract:
Analyzes the views expressed by Friedrich Delitzsch, a leading German Assyriologist, in three lectures delivered between 1902-04 and in his published works, in which he claimed that the Hebrew Bible was deeply influenced by, and in part directly based upon, Mesopotamian traditions. In his last work, entitled "Die grosse Täuschung" (1920-21), he explained that his aim was to expose the untruthfulness of the historical record in the Hebrew Scriptures in order to draw conclusions about "the Jewish question". States that Delitzsch's final acceptance of an antisemitic point of view appears to have been prompted by Germany's defeat in World War I. He claimed that Germany's decline was due "not least to the uninhibited development of Jewish characteristics on German soil". Refers, also, to Kaiser Wilhelm's reactions and basic support for Delitzsch's views from 1902 through the 1920s.
Note:
Mainly on Friedrich Delitzsch's views on the subject and his antisemitic conclusions.
