Abstract:
Evokes the memory of the lecture given by Sartre in June 1947, organized by the Alliance Israélite Universelle, during which he summarized his recently-published work, "Réflexions sur la question juive". Rejects Sartre's definition of Jewish identity: that authentic Jews are those who accept the identity imposed upon them and inauthentic Jews are those who deny it. Compares the text of the book with the lecture (published in this issue of the journal), where the term "Israélite" replaces the term "Juif" utilized in the book. Exposes Sartre's stereotypes of the relationship between Jews and the economy, the physical traits of Jews, and their identity as a culture vs. race. Criticizes Sartre's ignorance of Jewish history and his description of antisemitism in France. Notes his silence in the book regarding Vichy collaboration with the Nazis. Concludes that while most French Jews, whether "authentic" or "inauthentic", were abandoned by their compatriots during the occupation, a minority of French citizens defied antisemitic policy and came to their aid. Regrets that Sartre ignored both of these facts in his work.
