Abstract:
In the year 339 in Persia, King Shabur II demanded a poll-tax from the Christian community in order to continue a siege of Rome. When the bishop in the capital city protested he was condemned to death, and during the next 40 years Christians in Persia were persecuted. At the time, the Jews were accused of provoking the king's anger against the Christians and even of proselytizing, causing tensions between Christians and Jews. Discusses the polemics of Aphrahat, a Persian church leader of the 4th century, who refuted alleged Jewish arguments that the persecution of the Christians proved that God disapproved of the Christian faith.
