Abstract:
Examines ideological conflicts and struggles between Christians and Jews in Edessa (now Urfa, Turkey) during the 3rd-5th centuries. The 3rd century foundation legend of the Edessa Syriac Church, the Doctrina Addoi, claimed its origin from the time of Christ, and was used as propaganda to convert the Jews. Later, when religious tensions increased, the legend was changed to express anti-Jewish feelings. The theologian Ephrem the Syrian condemned the Christians in Edessa who were attracted to Judaism.
