Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference "Europe under Nazi Rule and the Holocaust" (Warsaw, 1999). Surveys Polish historiography on the Holocaust written by both Jews and Poles. Research on Nazi-occupied Poland began immediately after the war, through the collection of testimonies about the fate of the Jews by the Central Jewish Historical Commission, which became the Jewish Historical Institute (ŻIH) in 1947. Stresses that the publications of the communist period were influenced by political pressures. In the 1950s, the authorities demanded an emphasis on the role of the communists. After 1968 the merits of Poles in aiding Jews were emphasized, and differences in the fate of the Poles and the Jews were downplayed. After the fall of communism, serious research on the history of the Jews was undertaken. In the press there have been many discussions on Polish-Jewish relations. But one consequence of the abolition of censorship is the appearance of antisemitic publications.
