Abstract:
An enlarged version of a paper delivered at a symposium in Vienna, November 1987. Argues that the Nazi regime not only persecuted the Jews but also the Christians, and that this led to Christian-Jewish dialogue after the Second World War. The Jews' suspicious attitude towards the Christians was allayed following the "Nostra aetate" declaration (1965), although the Catholic Church still has difficulties in recognizing the State of Israel. The aims of the dialogue are different for both sides: Christians wish to resolve a theological problem, while Jews seek allies in their battle against antisemitism. Surveys anti-Judaism in the pre-Christian pagan period, in the Gospels, during the Middle Ages, and in the 19th century. States that eradicating antisemitism from the Christian religion will enable Jewish-Christian dialogue.
