Abstract:
Describes a course at the University of Michigan devoted to relations between Blacks and Jews, including racism and discrimination directed each against the other. The participating students included both Jews and Blacks. Assesses the students' reactions toward antisemitism, and shows how they changed their conceptions as a result of the course. In the beginning they declared that they had no prejudices, but acknowledged that they were ignorant of each other's history. As the course developed, they became frustrated with the difficulty of resolving extant conflicts. By the end, the students showed signs of emotional exhaustion, whilst expressing the need for a more realistic view of Black-Jewish relations as opposed to their simplistic assumptions at the beginning of the course.
