Abstract:
Focuses on Rabbi Charles E.H. Kauvar, who served from 1902 to 1952 as active rabbi at the Beth HaMedrosh Hagadol Congregation in Denver and as rabbi emeritus for 19 more years. Born in Vilna, he emigrated with his parents to New York at the age of two. He received a B.A. from City College of New York and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1902, where he also earned a D.H.L. in 1909. It was Rabbi Kauvar who brought Conservative Judaism to Denver. However, from 1949 he began to feel that the Conservative movement had lost its traditional moorings; he was instrumental in having his congregation disaffiliate with the movement in 1955. In 1956, the congregation elected an Orthodox rabbi to the pulpit; the synagogue became a member of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations in 1972.
