Abstract:
Traces the competition between the German administration of the Czech Protectorate and the "autonomous" Czech government over the authority to Aryanize Jewish property. This contest was decided in favor of the Germans in Reichsprotektor Neurath's decree of 21 June 1939. The Germans did not think it necessary to reply to protests by the Czechs, who did not oppose Aryanization in principle (they pointed out that they themselves, under the Republic, had already passed laws limiting Jewish economic activity), but only German monopoly of the profits. Neurath's decree also contained a definition of the "Jew" modeled on the Nuremberg Laws. But the Germans left it to the Czechs to pass laws for "the protection of Czech blood", i.e. prohibition of sexual relationships between Aryans and non-Aryans. Their confidence that the Czechs would do so was justified.
