Abstract:
In 1940-44 the Bergson Group rallied around Hillel Kook (aka Peter Bergson), who led a protest campaign that forced the Roosevelt administration to change its policy concerning the rescue of European Jews during the Holocaust. Discusses the propaganda pageant "We Will Never Die", staged on the initiative of the group in 1943; the march of 400 rabbis to the White House in the same year; the establishment of the War Refugee Board by Roosevelt in 1944 under pressure from the group; and other aspects of the campaign. The Bergsonites made many opponents among the mainstream Jewish organizations, as well as within the British and U.S. governments.
