Abstract:
Traces the fate of a child victim of the Holocaust, Gerhard Eckmann, who was born in the village of Burgpreppach, Germany in 1929. He was sent to Belgium in 1939, and his parents remained in Germany; they did not survive. Eckmann was cared for in an orphanage until the Germans invaded, when he fled, along with a group of children, to southern France. In 1941-43 he was in Italian-controlled Nice, cared for by the organization to aid Jewish children established by Rabbi Zalmann Schneerson. He was hidden in several locations until the Gestapo arrested him with other Jewish boys hiding near Voiron. They were sent to Drancy and then to Auschwitz. Eckmann's last trace led to the Sachsenhausen sub-camp of Lieberose, where he was apparently shot.
