Abstract:
American Jewish communities responded to compelling events and shifting assumptions in the year from September 2021 to September 2022. President Joseph P. Biden worked toward building on a long-standing positive relationship with American Jews and with Israel, despite differences over strategies for dealing with Iran and resistance from some in the progressive wing of the Democratic party. The televised series of January 6 committee reports revealed dramatic images and narratives of organized, armed right-wing groups and information about their implicit antisemitism. Russia’s extended invasion of Ukraine shocked Americans and evoked complex feelings among American Jews. The Supreme Court’s stunning Dobbs ruling undermined women’s reproductive freedoms in many states, and conveyed ominous additional implications for Jewish Americans. Rising incidences of antisemitic events and propaganda precipitated concerns. Although a majority of American Jews continued to view a strict separation of church and state as beneficial for Jewish personal and religious freedoms, some advocated for funding for religious schools and school vouchers, and for federal funds for security for synagogues and other Jewish religious institutions. Revised voting districts in several states threatened a decline in Jewish influence nationally, and specifically among Jewish legislators in New York. Some Jews defied remaining governmental Covid-19 restrictions and other health policies. Jewish religious institutions dealt with diminishing size and the closing or consolidation of some facilities, and both religious and secular Jewish institutions dealt with health and security challenges. Meanwhile, American Jews were prominent in a broad range of contemporary cultural discussions and debates, particularly giving voice to a classical liberal-conservative sensibility. Both Jewish Americans and Israelis were highly visible in press coverage and literary accounts, and on television, film, and streaming screens, winning prestigious awards.
