Abstract:
Describes Nazi domination of Danzig's cultural life after 1933. Even though the constitution forbade discrimination, the municipal theater and other cultural institutions excluded Jewish directors and performers; their repertoire was determined by recommendations from the Reich. In this situation, the Jews founded their own cultural institutions on the model of the Jewish Kulturbund in Germany, with a more congenial repertoire and the possibility of employing the dismissed Jewish performers from Danzig itself as well as guests from Germany.
