Abstract:
Discusses Hungarian Jews' sense of Jewish identity, which is only now awakening after decades of forced assimilation under the communist regime. At the same time, a new vicious antisemitism has emerged: resentment of Holocaust victims' claims for restitution, and accusations of betrayal of Hungarian nationhood by "foreign" capitalists and liberals. Compares this with antisemitism after the First World War, when Jews were similarly accused of subverting the national character through capitalist exploitation and modernization.
