Abstract:
Discusses the first "Kasztner trial" in 1955 and the second trial in 1958, which took place after Kasztner's murder. At the first trial, Judge Binyamin Halevy adopted a stance popular at the time in Israel, which criticized the Jews for going "like sheep to the slaughter" in the Holocaust without taking into account the conditions under which they lived. At the second trial, Judge Agranat and most of his four colleagues adopted a more enlightened view, which included reluctance to judge the actions of Holocaust victims; this view gradually became more accepted in Israeli society and became part of Israeli Holocaust remembrance.
