Abstract:
First delivered as the 1999 John Courtney Murray lecture, and published in "America" (11 September 1999). Contends that Jewish complaints against and criticism of the Catholic Church are at present overstated. Since Vatican Council II, the Church has been deeply committed to the dialogue with Judaism to a degree unprecedented in the history of Christianity. Admitting that it was the Early Church which inspired the Christian-Jewish conflict, notes that throughout the two millennia, the attitude of the Church toward the Jews was always an expression of anti-Judaism but not racial antisemitism, which was invented by the Enlightenment. In accordance with the theological principles of Augustine and Gregory the Great, the Church physically protected the Jews. Thus, the Church cannot be held responsible for the genocide of Jews. Pp. 14-19 contain a response by Rosemary Ruether, who contends that Fisher represents the history of Christian anti-Judaism in too benign a way and downplays the fact that racial antisemitism was, to a great extent, a re-interpretation of anti-Judaism. Pp. 20-23 contain a response by Tony Bayfield, who contends that Jewish criticism of the Church is legitimate, and calls for a more profound dialogue.
