Abstract:
Analyzes 16 testimonies of Jewish Orthodox women, survivors of Auschwitz, who were deported in 1944 from Hungary and territories annexed to Hungary. The texts are part of 46 testimonies documented by Moshe Davis, in conjunction with Yad Vashem, during group therapy sessions conducted by him with Holocaust survivors who founded the moshav Nir Galim in Israel and attended discussions and lectures about the Holocaust. Presents data on the background of the interviewees, e.g. age, origins (family and community), and socioeconomic status. Focuses on their interpretations of their ordeal, their survival strategies, and the impact of their cultural, spiritual, and religious origins on their coping mechanisms in the concentration camp. States that their hope to be reunited with their families, supportive social connections in the camp, and their religious faith probably had a great impact on their survival.
