Abstract:
Views of the Holocaust in the Arab world range from justification to denial and, unlike in Europe, are used by governments and in mainstream politics. These views include accusations of Zionist collaboration with the Nazis, equation of Zionism with Nazism, seeing the Palestinians as the real victims of the Holocaust, and minimalization or relativization of the Holocaust. Discusses works by Holocaust deniers which have become popular in the Arab world; the Roger Garaudy affair in France in 1996-98 (Garaudy converted to Islam in 1982); two conferences of Arab revisionist historians - one planned to take place in Beirut in April 2001 but aborted, and one which actually took place in Amman in May 2001; and attempts made by some Arab intellectuals to create an alternative dialogue and to discontinue use of the Holocaust for political purposes.
