Abstract:
Surveys the French political and intellectual milieu during the Dreyfus Affair. The Affair deepened the split between the republican tradition of the French Revolution and the right-wing, monarchist, clericalist, and antisemitic trends. Mentions that, in the Dreyfus Affair and in anti-Jewish pamphlets published by Edouard Drumont and others, antisemitism provided the mold in which the Affair was formed and it envenomed the character of the public debate. Modern antisemitism had emerged by then as a relatively integrative myth prevalent in France. Much later, the Vichy regime can be seen to have been the culmination of the anti-Dreyfusard tradition in France.
