Abstract:
European attitudes toward Israel have continued to deteriorate since the early 1980s. Public opinion perceives Israel as a threat to world peace, the mass media have become unilaterally pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli in their coverage of the Middle East conflict, and European antipathy toward Israel informs policies. Sharon became a focus of this anti-Israeli stance. The demonization of Sharon by the European mass media led to the escalation of anti-Zionism and the denial of Israel's legitimacy as a Jewish state. The catalyzing effect on anti-Zionism of the hatred of Sharon can be seen in the media's reaction to three events: Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount in September 2000, Israel's "Operation Defensive Shield" in 2001, and the killing of Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 2004.
