Abstract:
Discusses the work of Jewish historical commissions established in DP camps and cities in Europe after World War II, as well as of Jewish organizations which already existed before or during the war, whose purpose was to record testimonies of Holocaust victims. Notes that most of the people involved in collecting the testimonies were not historians, but intellectuals who understood the significance of eyewitness accounts for future generations. The aims of the commissions included commemorating those who died, telling the story of the Holocaust from a Jewish point of view, bringing war criminals to justice, and confronting the harsh realities of the Holocaust.
