Abstract:
Discusses the polemical work by Salah Abd al-Fattah Khalidi, "Haqa'iq Qur'aniyya Hawla al-Qadiyya al-Filastiniyya" ("Qur'anic Facts regarding the Palestinian Issue"), which was first published by Hamas in 1991; later editions in 1994 and 1997 attest to the popularity of the book. Khalidi's polemics, like those of the medieval period, describe the Jews as plotting to take control of the area, and Hamas as an "army of truth" attempting to foil this plot. The book is mainly a commentary on the Qur'an, which is said to contain all that has happened and will happen in Palestine, including the success of the Jews and their eventual downfall. It denies the right of the Jews to live in Israel; therefore, negotiations of making peace with them are absolutely forbidden. Discusses Khalidi's commentaries on various verses in the Qur'an. His polemics use religious arguments for political and social ends, and represent current radical Islamist views.
