Abstract: When the German occupation military authority asked for a list of the Jews in Firenze in 1943, all Jewish ritual functions ceased and the offices of the community were closed. A clandestine committee was organized to assist the Jews in Firenze. The committee, partly supported by ecclesiastical authorities, helped them find shelter and obtain false documents, clothing and food. The first raid was on 6 November 1943; ca. 600 Jews were arrested and deported to Auschwitz. Despite this the committee continued its work until it was betrayed by an informer. The members were arrested and tortured; most of them were sent to Auschwitz. On the same night that the committee members were arrested, the Nazis entered convents where ca. 80 Jews were hidden - men, women, and children; they, too, were sent to Auschwitz.
