Abstract:
Based on examination of Hungarian documents, refutes the argument of Christian Gerlach and Götz Aly in their book "Das lezte Kapitel: Realpolitik, Ideologie und der Mord an den ungarischen Juden 1944/1945" (2000) that the Hungarian government, not the Nazis, planned the deportation of the Hungarian Jews. Also disputes their claim that the wealth of Hungarian Jewry was successfully exploited by the Germans to aid their war economy. Claims that a definitive history of the Holocaust in Hungary has yet to be written. Suggests that, when this is undertaken, it should be done not nationally but on the basis of gendarme districts or deportation zones. It should be written by authors who, unlike Gerlach and Aly, either know Hungarian or have trustworthy translators.
