Abstract:
States that after the fall of communism the Eastern Bloc countries, with the exception of the Czech Republic, are returning to a political tradition identical with that existing before 1938, or before 1917 in the former USSR. This tradition was characterized by a lack of real democracy, pluralism and tolerance, and by a strong mixture of nationalist and religious feelings, and of course by different degrees of antisemitism. Adds to this the collective memory of the Jews' participation in the communist establishment (which had promised them a society without discrimination) and concludes that the Jews in Eastern Europe are in for a tough period marked by antisemitic tendencies and outbursts. Pp. 72-75 contain a discussion.
Note:
Pp. 72-75: Debate.
