Abstract:
Analyzes differences between the painting by Adolph Menzel (1851) on the subject of Christ teaching in the Temple (Luke 2:46-47), and that by Max Liebermann, the German Jewish artist, on the same subject in 1879. Argues that Liebermann's work was intended as a protest against the rise of antisemitism in Germany at that time and that he considered the Jewish figures in Menzel's painting as antisemitic caricatures. Surveys the controversy between contemporary art critics on Liebermann's painting; some accused him of blasphemy and others criticized the fact that a Jew was dealing with a New Testament subject.
