Abstract:
Examines Mel Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ" in the context of postwar interfaith Christian-Jewish relations in the U.S. Concludes that the anti-Vatican II thrust of the film, which reinforces the traditional Christian view of the Jews as deicides, appeals particularly to Christian biblical literalists like Protestant evangelicals, and that it points to the limited success of interfaith and Catholic efforts to oppose antisemitism.
