Abstract:
Defends the austere style and language of Primo Levi's "Survival in Auschwitz" (first published in English as "If This Is a Man") against some of his critics, who accuse Levi of callousness. Argues that his calm and sober language of witness can evoke empathy rather than sympathy and compassion for him as a victim. The reality of Auschwitz and the art of survival there, to which the book is devoted, leave no place for deep sentiment. Reflects on Levi's alleged suicide in 1987; believes that, in essence, Levi died in Auschwitz, along with his only friend Alberto.
