Abstract:
Extensive commemorative literature has been written about the fallen in the War of Independence. Thearticle examines the interrelationship between thenational language of mourning – ‘national language’– and the private expressions of mourning – ‘motherlanguage’ – and their significance for the values andsocial perceptions of Jewish society in the countryduring the state’s first years. The words of the bereaved parents in memorial books show that for the most part, men and women alike used both ‘national language’ aswell as ‘mother tongue’ in their writing, sometimes aspart of a dialogue and a process of reconciliation andsometimes as part of a conflict between national andprivate rhetoric. The memorial books gave expressionto the private voice, which is usually marginalized within the national space and made it possible toshape the language of bereavement “from below”. In addition, the use of the ‘national language’ enabled women, who were usually excluded from the publicarena, to express their feminine voice in the national space. Through the use of the ‘mother language’, the bereaved fathers gained presence in the private space and the opportunity to express paternal heartbreak. The memoirs of the War of Independence show that‘mother language’ was adopted by the nation as alegitimate language and offered a complementary story to the national story
