Abstract: The distinction between majority and minority groups reflects the balance of power in any society. We should consider the extent to which a group influences social, cultural and political discourse rather than its demographic size. We argue that the secular group’s influence on the lives of its members does not correspond to its demographic size. Since its establishment, the Supreme Court of Israel has served as the guardian of the secular group in Israel, promoting liberal rights and democratic values. The supposition that Israel’s secular-majority group will be able to preserve the hegemony in the public sphere might not prevail. Given Israel’s political structure, minority non-liberal and orthodox-religious groups use their political power to grant members of their community greater rights, consistently weakening the interests and values of Israel’s secular group in the process. We suggest that multicultural defense should not be limited to the demographic minorities and should also protect political minority groups. This protection can have practical implications such as granting autonomy in certain areas, the right to maintain an independent educational system, public transportation on Saturday and the right to secular marriage and divorce.
