Abstract:
Traces the debate concerning Celan's lyrical pathos, Adorno's apodidactic stance, and Arendt's view of the possibility of sober narration in Holocaust representation. All three positions play a prominent role in Holocaust debates and have been contrasted with each other since the 1960s. Shows that there was indirect discussion among Celan, Adorno, and Arendt already in the late 1940s. From the 1960s on, Adorno openly discussed the subject with Celan, and Adorno and Arendt confronted each other in their discussions on Walter Benjamin's work. Argues that, although no open exchange took place between Celan and Arendt, a hidden struggle went on over Holocaust interpretation.
