Abstract:
Discusses the difficulty of learning from the Holocaust experience, despite the great volume of printed Holocaust literature. Many people avoid reading such literature altogether or only read books that portray the victims as heroes, not as normal human beings like themselves. Despairing conclusions about the irrationality of the world are another form of escape. Survivors themselves have difficulty in coming to terms with their experience. Contrasts despair with humankind in the stories of Tadeusz Borowski with Primo Levi's observation of the behavior of real individuals. Asserts that of the two, it is Levi who has more to teach us.
