Antisemitism History To 1500
Abstract:
Examines medieval Hebrew chronicles relating the history of the Jews in Spain (in particular, "Shevet Yehudah" by Solomon ibn Verga), and summarizes their various references to the anti-Judaism in Spanish society. Notes the rejection of the Jews due to intolerance, especially among the social elites, and envy on the part of the general populace. Anti-Jewish attitudes, based on stereotypes, led to blood libels, religious disputations, attacks on Jewish quarters, and forced conversions. Jewish historiography of the time deals with the theme of inter-ethnic relations, and illuminates the present-day Jewish understanding of antisemitism in medieval Spain. States that European neo-fascism today also reflects intolerance based on ignorance.
