Abstract:
Elucidates the status of Jews in theory and practice in terms of medieval law: the Jews lacked rights. They paid "bribery" to rulers, which in reality was protection money, and they, as well as their property, were chattel. The Jews were owned by kings, noblemen, and Churchmen, who vied with each other for the taxes received and expelled the Jews when they had been wrung dry. When the Jews were given protection from mobs or other religious violence, it was not given just to help them but was very much to the advantage of their "owners".
